Rich Text Format

Use the Rich text format to show a rich text field with its formatting: headings, lists, checkboxes, bold text and links.

In Airtable, a rich text field is a Long text field with Enable rich text formatting turned on. Airtable sends its content as Markdown, so without this format your document shows the raw Markdown. For example, a task's Description field comes out like this:

# Launch plan
Ship the **Q3** release, see [the brief](https://example.com/brief).
- Draft homepage copy
- Review pricing with legal
[x] Contract signed

With Rich text selected, the same field shows a heading, a bold "Q3", a clickable link, a bulleted list and a ticked checkbox.

Turn it on

  1. Insert the field by typing @ in the editor.
  2. Click the field to open Display Format.
  3. Select Rich text and click Apply Format.

You can also use it for any other field whose text contains Markdown, such as a formula or AI field. Leave it off for plain text fields: characters like * and # would be read as formatting.

Put the field on its own line

Headings and lists need a line of their own. Place the field alone on a line, or alone in a table cell, to get them.

When the field shares a line with other text (for example, "Notes:" followed by the field), the formatting stays inside that line. Bold, italic and links still work, and each line of the field starts on a new line, but headings become bold text and list items keep their bullet or number as text.

Good to know

  • The text keeps the font, size and colour you set on the field. Headings are larger versions of it.
  • Blank lines are kept, so the spacing matches what you see in Airtable.
  • Indented list items are shown as items of the same list.
  • For a lookup or linked record field with several values, each value appears as its own block.
  • In draft mode, the formatted text can be edited like any other text.
